Off the Wall is the fifth studio album by Michael Jackson. It was recorded between December 1978 and June 1979 and was released August 10, 1979. Five of the ten songs on the album became singles and with four of the five becoming top ten hits on charts. The album received amazing critical reception, winning numerous awards, and becoming known as the album that broke him off the Jackson 5.

Background Edit

With a greatest hits album preceding "Off the Wall", the last official studio album before the latter was "Forever, Michael" which was generally well received by critics. "Off the Wall" contained the smooth R&B and pop flow that was evident in "Forever, Michael". The "Off the Wall" album was recorded during a period that Michael desperately wanted to express his own song creativity rather than using material pre-written for him and his brothers and had been long trying to get to. This was the first album that was not released under Motown Records, where he and his brother recorded, but under Epic, the record label he would stay with until his death.
